Alfred Weis was a carpenter from Toowoomba who enlisted in early 1916. Weis arrived in France with 1st Pioneer Battalion and was wounded in action in October 1916, though he was fit for duty within a month. His quick recovery was not communicated to his family back in Australia, leading to L. E. Groom, MP and sometime minister in Australia’s wartime government to enquire on his condition on the family’s behalf.
The remainder of Weis’s war was relatively unremarkable in terms of his records, as the 1st Pioneers fought at Bullecourt and Ypres. His war ended when he was sent on leave two days before armistice.
After the war, Weis continued to live in Toowoomba, working as a builder as late as the 1930s when he won the tender to undertake works at Ramsay State School.
Weis was also a soccer player for the Middle Ridge club before and after the war, with his name added to the Toowoomba British Football Association honour board in 1918.
