Alfred James Tregea enlisted in January 1915 and arrived in Gallipoli with the 9th Battalion in May before transferring to 49th Battalion a year later. Tregea served with no notable misfortune during a period which included the Battle of Messines and Polygon Wood, until he was killed in action in July 1918 during the latter stages of the German spring offensive. He was buried in Crucifix Corner Cemetery in Villers-Bretonneux.
His obituary in the Toowoomba Chronicle noted his prominence in local cricket and football, while a picture with his brother William was also published in his honour. Both brothers were named on the Toowoomba British Football Association honour board unveiled two months before his death.

He likely played with Cities though his club career is difficult to track as the lack of first initials used in match reports make it difficult to differentiate him from his younger brothers. He did play for the Toowoomba representative side as a goalkeeper against Pittsworth in 1912.
