Albert John Hyde was born in April 1889 in Birmingham, Warwickshire. After the death of his parents he migrated first to Sydney and then found his way to Victoria where he played a starring role in the local game, whether for club (Birmingham), the England ‘International’ team or the Victorian state team.

He enlisted very early in the war and served and was wounded at Gallipoli. He had a stellar military career and rose through the ranks, also being mentioned in despatches for conspicuous gallantry and leadership. He was killed instantly near Ypres on 4 October 1917, when a shell hit him in the head. He was buried in West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
