Erland Gorman from Carlingford in Sydney played football in the Granville District competition. A clerk for the NSW Government Railways and Tramways department, Gorman enlisted after the end of the 1915 football season and became a driver in the 3rd Australian Division.
He served in England, Egypt and France and returned home on the SS Bakari in 1918. Gorman didn’t come directly back home, instead he disembarked in Tasmania and stayed some time and toured the island. But his community didn’t forget him. When he arrived back home, Gorman and his family were driven through the streets of Carlingford in a truck bededcked with flags and streamers. Almost the entire population of the suburb lined the streets to welcome him back.
