James Cleghorn, a baker from the eastern suburbs of Adelaide, enlisted in the AIF in October 1915. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, he was 26 years old and married with one child. He had been a forward with the St Peters club in 1914 and 1915. This short-lived club won the second tier league in 1914 and finished fourth in the seven-team wartime league in 1915.
He served as a gunner in the field artillery in France and lost his life in an unfortunate accident on 27th October 1916. Whilst running to catch a train at Abbeville station, he tripped over a wheelbarrow and fell onto the tracks. He was pulled out from under the train but died a short time later.
