On June 30 1917, “Goalie” of the Newcastle Morning Herald reported, “West Wallsend’s soccer soldiers are again among the killed and wounded. Word has been received that Private Fred Cantello (spelled Cantelo) has been killed. Private Cantello was one of West Wallsend soccer club’s keenest supporters. He acted as trainer to their team in 1913 and 14. His work was so valuable to the team that in both seasons they won the Richmond Cup (which is the State’s junior championship). In 1914 they also won the local junior competition. So his work to the club was very valuable, and his death will be a big loss to district soccer. A good sport, being vice-captain of West Wallsend Life-saving Club, and holding the 100 yards championship of the club, the sympathy of all his soccer friends go out to the deceased’s relatives.”
Private Frederick Cantelo enlisted with “Newcastle’s Own” 35th Battalion. He was killed in the Battle of Messines on 9 June 1917, one day after his 28th birthday.
