Vere Fenton Herald arrived in Adelaide in 1909. He played regularly as the Adelaide soccer club’s goalkeeper from 1910 to 1915, winning three successive Cambridge Cups with the city club, 1912-1914.
He was born in Berwickshire, Scotland, in 1890 and when he joined the AIF in July 1917 he gave his occupation as accountant. He did not mention the two convictions he had for breaking the speed limit on his motor bike. Vere trained with various Pioneer and Infantry units, reaching the Western Front with the 48th Battalion in April 1918. He suffered illnesses including VD, was attached to HQ staff in London, and given leave for non-military work, not being discharged until December 1919.
Herald made a comeback with the newly formed Glenelg club in 1922, and played on until 1924. 40 years old Vere Herald married 19-year-old Gwenneth White in Adelaide in 1931. A Mr Herald refereed the SA vs Broken Hill match at Alberton Oval in 1912. It is possible that this was Vere’s father.
