On 19 July 1918 Sydney’s Arrow reported that yet
another of Weston’s Soccer players has paid the supreme sacrifice—Private Tom Kirk, an under-18 player, who was killed in action after only a short time in the trenches. He played centre half for Weston Juniors, and was well liked and respected by his mates. Tom will be missed both for his good football and his genial disposition.
Thomas Kirk said he was 21 years and 9 months when enlisted. He had added three years, as the Hebburn Colliery miner was actually 18. Private Kirk was posted to France in April 1918 and killed in action shortly after on 24 June 1918 at Villers Bretonneux. He was only 20 years of age.
