Arthur Edward ‘Mustard’ Jones was born on 4 April 1882 in Gloucestershire. His family migrated to Australia soon after. He married Elspeth U Jones in 1905 in Merewether.
Enlisting on 22 March 1916, in 1917 Private Jones played at least one game in France for the 34th Battalion in a 3-1 loss to the 36th. He was wounded three times before being “invalided” to Australia with “nerve deafness” on 15 January 1919.Â
He resumed playing soon after and reports suggest in 1919 “that in spite of his lengthy stay in France he is playing better than when he enlisted.” He died on 14 July 1949 in Newcastle at the age of 67.
