On 26 June 1915, ‘Unomi’ in The West Australian reported, “I have just heard that another player (H. Carter) has been killed in action at the Dardanelles. Carter played for the Leederville team (who have three others with the army), with whom he was held in high esteem. This is the first junior soldier who has paid for his loyalty with his life; and it is a strange coincidence that the name should be the same as that of our first loss in senior circles. It will he remembered that Major Carter was the first casualty reported.” Private Carter was shot in the abdomen at Gallipoli and was transferred to the hospital ship Gascon where he died soon after at sea. He was only 20 years of age.
