Walter Hammond was the one of three brothers, Leslie (older) and Allen (younger), who attended Claremont Public School, played for Claremont and enlisted to fight in the Great War. Like his older brother he enlisted in the 10th Light Horse and both saw action in Gallipoli.

Allen was wounded in the leg and transferred to Malta where he also caught influenza. He later served in France with the 4th Divisional Ammunition Column. He along with his brother Leslie survived the war, his younger brother Allen was killed in action in France in 1916.

Walter Hammond died in Nedlands, WA, in 1961 at the age of 67.
