Leslie Hammond and his two younger brothers, Walter and Allen, attended Claremont Public School and played for Claremont. They also enlisted to fight in the Great War. Leslie saw action at Gallipoli and the Middle East. During his service he rose through the ranks from Private to Lieutenant. On 3 May 1918 he received a severe gunshot wound to the left elbow which ended his war. On 30 August 1918 he boarded the HT Wiltshire in Suez for his return to Perth. Leslie Hammond died in Dalkeith, WA, in 1972 at the age of 80. Walter also survived the war, Allen was killed in action in France in 1916.
