On 18 February 1918, the Newcastle Morning Herald reported on the return of “Private James Thompson, who left for active service with Newcastle’s Own Battalion, returned to his home in Thomas Street, Adamstown, on Saturday evening, and was accorded a hearty reception. He was met at the Newcastle railway station by Ald. Cameron, and Mr. W. Brown, representing the Patriotic Committee and afterwards conveyed to his home in a motor car, accompanied by his parents and relatives. It was just one year and ten months since he left to fight for his King and country, and he had done his share in the noble cause. He had now returned, maimed for life, but although in that way it must be pleasing tor his parents to have him home again. The gathering also showed in what esteem the parents were held by the people of the town, and it must be also inspiring to Private Thompson, but he would venture to say that what was done was a small return for the part he had played in this great war. Included in the company were a number of the boys of the Adamstown Under 18 Football Club, of which Private Thompson was a prominent member prior to enlisting. Private Thompson took part in several engagements, and was wounded in 21 places on the body. He has unfortunately lost the sight of his left eye, and also carries several marks on his face as the results of his wounds. He is only 21 years of age, having reached his majority on February 8. A public reception and welcome will be given Private Thompson with other returned men at a later date.”

James Thompson died on 6 June 1945, aged 48.
