On 23 March 1917, the Newcastle Morning Herald reported, "CORPORAL WESTHEAD.—Mr. and Mrs. Westhead, Dixon-street, Hamilton, late of Merewether, have been informed that their son, Acting-corporal W. B. Westhead, 1st Brigade Machine Gun Company, has been invalided home, and will arrive in Sydney the beginning of April." William Westhead appears on the Merewether Advance honor board. Before enlisting, at the age of 18, he was making regular appearance in Merewether's lower grade teams. Corporal Westhead was wounded in the chest on 19 August 1916 in a field in France. He died in Merewether in 1965, aged 68.
