On 14 June 1917, the Newcastle Morning Herald reported that “Mr. M. Marshall, of Shedden-street, Cessnock, has been informed, through the Rev. C. M. O. Stretch, that his brother, Private John “Jock” Marshall, has died of wounds in France. The deceased soldier was previously wounded on one occasion. He was a prominent British footballer, and the sad news of his death has met with much sympathy from his old football comrades.” He was 30 years of age.
