On 3 October 1917, the Newcastle Morning Herald reported, “Cessnock’s secretary states that W. Lynch, who before enlisting was a member of that district’s Soccer club, had been ‘gassed’ in France, and was returning home, when within a fortnight’s sail of Australia he died. This was sad news for the relatives of the deceased, who were waiting his arrival.” According to his military records, Private William Lynch was admitted to hospital on 20 January 1917 with what was thought to be bronchitis. He was transferred to hospital England where tuberculosis of the lung was diagnosed. He departed England for Australia on 21 July 1917 and died at sea on 28 August 1917. He was 25 years of age.
