John Gall arrived in Neath from Scotland in 1911 to work in the mines and was a constant fixture in the local team up to the time he enlisted in the 34th Battalion. During his war service Private Gall had a fondness for skipping off for some recreation. While waiting in England to be transferred to the front in France he went AWL for 3 days in October 1916. For this offence he served 21 days field punishement. Behind the trenches he played for 34th Battalion in their 3-2 against “The Jocks”. He was wounded in the forearm in April 1918 and transferred to England to recover. While there he went AWL again, this time for 6 days, and served another 12 days of field punishment. He survived the war and returned to Australia. In 1926 he married Amy Abbott and was father to three children. John Gall passed away in Seven Hill, NSW, at the ripe old age of 94.
