Born in Earlestown, Lancashire in 1990, Harry Waddington came to Melbourne in 1912 and worked as a wheelwright in Footscray. A regular goal scorer, he played for Sunshine in 1913 and as an inside forward for Spotswood in 1914 and 1915.
He embarked for Egypt six days before the 1915 Dockerty Cup Final and died around the time the 1916 Dockerty Cup was discontinued “for the duration of the war.” Admitted to hospital in Cairo after being diagnosed with rheumatism, he developed malignant cachexia (wasting syndrome) and died on 18 March 1916.
He lies in the Cairo War Memorial Cemetery.
