On 25 August 1917, the Newcastle Morning Herald reported, “Dudley, that small but keen, soccer district has sent 20 players to the front.” John Broadbent, and his older brother George, were two of them. On 17 October 1916 Private Broadbent dislocated his shoulder while in the field in France. He was transferred to England and invalided with limited mobility of the right shoulder. He returned to Australia, arriving in Sydney on 16 November, 1917. Two weeks earlier his brother George, who was also invalided, had arrived back in Australia.
