Joseph Bartley’s name was inscribed on the Merewether Advance honor board. He was a regular player in their lower grade teams for many seasons up until the time of his enlistment. Private Bartley never got to the Western Front. After enlisting and before embarking for England he was hospitalised for two months with gonorrhea. While in England he was invalided with a deformed right arm. On 13 August 1917, a medical board of examiners wrote, “owing to old injury to the right arm this limb is practically useless and can not be profitably employed.” He returned to Australia, married and was father to seven children. He died in 1958, aged 67.
