Charles William ‘Jock’ Grieves was born on 18 May 1892 in North Shields, Northumberland. He migrated to Victoria with his family in 1911 and played initially in the Yarraville area. He and younger brother Joseph (a clearly better player) transferred to Northumberland & Durham for the 1915 season.

Charles joined the AIF late, in mid 1918 and spent most of his short time in England hospitalised, returning in mid 1919.

He resumed playing with Northumberland & Durham after the war and died on 17 May 1935 in Korongvale, Victoria, at the age of 42
