Thomas Ernest Lowe was born in 1888 in Old Machar, Aberdeenshire. The Lowe family emigrated to Melbourne in 1901 and the four sons each came to prominence as a player with the strong St. Kilda club. A popular member of the club, in 1910 Tommie became club captain at the ripe old age of 21. The captain of Victoria v Tasmania in 1912, he played another four times for Victoria on the 1914 tour to NSW.

Enlisting as a private on 25 February 1915, he was eventually promoted to Lieutenant and subsequently recommended for a Military Medal on 25 May 1918 for

conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This officer was in command of a party who were charged with the duty of clearing enemy details from a village. It was mainly due to his gallantry and admirable cooperation and systematic working of the parties detailed for different sectors being excellent. He himself was wounded, but remained in the fighting till the end. He set a fine example of courage and fine leadership, which were of the utmost value in the operation.

Invalided home he took up duties as recruiting officer for the Fawkner and Balaclava electorates. After the war he lived in the inner south eastern suburbs of Melbourne. He resumed playing for St Kilda but after his injury in a game in 1921 reports are hard to find.

He died in Black Rock in 1955.
