Andrew Blair enlisted in May 1915 and was killed at Pozieres in July 1916, aged 32.
Blair had been an executive and referee for the School’s Soccer Association in Brisbane, having taught at Nundah State School for 13 years, and was also involved in Wellington Football Club at Kangaroo Point. He was appointed a 2nd Lieutenant when he joined the AIF having held a similar rank with the cadets for many years.
Blair arrived at the base depot in Etaples in April 1916 and joined the 9th Battalion in early June. On the 24th of July he received a gunshot wound to the abdomen and died. Blair was buried at the Warloy-Baillon Communal Cemetery. Nine years later his parents, both aged in their 70s, travelled to the cemetery. Blair’s father wrote a lengthy letter to the Record Office giving thank to the assistance they had given in making the journey possible, alongside Australian House in London, the YMCA and various guides.
