Sydney born Dick Moxham was as an apprentice blacksmith at the Clyde Engineering Works in Granville. His father also worked in the firm as a nightwatchman. Like many of his work colleagues, Moxham played football in the local junior competition. A music lover, he had been stationed with the 13 Battalion band for some time and also played with the Granville Municipal Band.
In 1917 at the age of 19, already with a wife and a young daughter, Moxham enlisted in the AIF. He trained as a driver in England, arriving at the front in France in October 1918. He had been serving with the 4th Division for just a few weeks when he came down with broncho-pneumonia. His condition deteriorated and he died a few days later in a French hospital.
The date of his death was 11 November 1918, the day the war ended.
