Allen Hammond was the youngest of three brothers, including Leslie and Walter, who attended Claremont Public School, played for Claremont and enlisted to fight in the Great War.
Unlike his two brothers, who survived the war, Allen was tragically killed in action in Pozieres on 27 August 1916 at only 20 years of age. He had enlisted 14 months prior and by the time of his untimely death had already seen action in Gallipoli, where he caught frostbite, and had been promoted from Private to Sergeant.Â
