Thomas Herschel Wood was born in Glasgow and came to Adelaide in 1911. He was 24 years old and single. In 1912 he moved to Petersburg in the mid-north of South Australia to work as a store keeper. He was one of the earliest soccer players in the region, and captained the Petersburg team in matches against Port Adelaide, Broken Hill, South Adelaide and a “Metropolitan XI” over the next two years.
Wood enlisted in early 1916, and was sent with reinforcements to the 50th Battalion which was forming in Egypt. He was wounded at Pozieres not long after arriving in France. After being promoted to Lance Corporal he was killed in action on April 2nd 1917 during the unsuccessful Australian attack on Noreuil.
