Toowoomba-born Charles Ware was one of several players from Park Rangers football club who enlisted in August 1914. He joined the 3rd Field Ambulance and took part in the landing of Gallipoli on the April 25, 1915. The 3rd Field Ambulance stayed at Gallipoli until December when they were replaced with fresh units. After some months in Egypt, Ware and his unit were redeployed to the European front. It was here Ware earned the Military Medal for bravery at the Battle of Pozieres.
In 1918, Ware was chosen to attend the School of Military Aeronautics to become a Flying Officer and join the Australian Flying Corps. Ware’s Air Force application form noted football as one of the sports he played. The war ended before he could be deployed. Sometime after the war Ware became an instructor at the Toowoomba Aero Club and member of the Glider club.
