Quite a gloom was cast over the followers of the game last weekend, when they received news of the untimely end of Private Phil Hall, who succumbed to wounds sustained at the Dardanelles. It will be remembered that Phil was associated with the late Subiaco Club for two years and that toward last season end he signed on for the Casuals and assisted them to win the most coveted trophy of the Association. In fact, if I remember rightly, it was Hall who scored the goal that won Mr. W. Leslie’s medals (President of the Association) and Charity Cup for the Northerners. Hall was a keen, enthusiastic sportsman, and a man we may feel proud to have associated with. As an exponent of the code he was above the average, and it is difficult to realise that we will no longer see him go down the touch line with that long, raking stride that so nonplussed his opponents in October last.
Private Phillip Hall was severely wounded on 3 May 1915 at Gallipoli with gun shots to the lower spine and thigh. He was evacuated to Alexandria, Egypt, where he passed away on 16 May 1915. He was 24 years of age.
