In 1908 Albert Ashby and his younger brother David arrived in Moora from Kent, England with their parents and siblings. By 1914 they were playing for the Moora British Association Football Club of which David was a committee member. David answered the call to war early and paid the ultimate price on 30 June 1915 after succumbing to his wounds in a Cairo hospital.
After being previously rejected for AIF enlistment on account of a decayed bone in his leg, Albert successfully joined in October 1916 and was transferred to the 12th Battalion where he saw action in France.
Albert Ashby passed away in 1966 in Perth at the age of 76.
