Born in Tasmania, Cyril Tasman De Graff Hutchison moved to Perth with his family and attended Claremont State School where he learnt to play soccer. By the time he enlisted in September 1915 at the age of 21 he was well known in junior circles at the Claremont club.

Private Hutchison was killed in action less than a year later on 29 July 1916 at the Battle of Pozieres.
