Graham Hayes and his older brother, Edward, arrived in Perth from England in 1897 as young children. They both went on to become association footballers with the Claremont club, they both went on to enlist and tragically neither returned home.

Private Graham Hayes had just turned 19 when he joined the 28th Battalion on 29 September 1915. Less than 11 months later he lost his life in the Battle of Pozieres on 16 August 1916. His brother Edward died of illness in England three months later on 5 November 1916.
